What better time of year to get creative and start a new family tradition with our fun Christmas crafts using popcorn. At MPK, we are fanatical about popcorn and what better time of year to get creative with this fun snack. We have endless flavors and variations that could quite possibly knock your socks off (but keep them on or your tootsies might get a little chilly in this winter weather). Popcorn is such a versatile treat that we just had to share some of our favorite ways to enjoy it this time of year. Here are the most fun things to do with popcorn at Christmas time.
Fill Mason Jars with Popcorn and other goodies
Our popcorn comes in a variety of flavors and colors, making it perfect to display in mason jars. Very hot and trendy right now (which also makes them super easy to find), mason jars make great decorations and gifts.
We have so many fun ideas, that you just can’t go wrong! Try these out:
- Layer Green Apple, Strawberry and Vanilla gourmet popcorn for a super Christmas-y look and fruity flavor.
- For a super delicious flavor, try Candy Cane, Dark Chocolate Peppermint and Cinnamon, then repeat!
- Don’t forget about nuts! We love layering our savory cheese flavors with nuts like pecans or cashews.
- Pick your favorite chocolate! Mix up some white cheddar with Christmas M&Ms for a little sweet and salty!
- Don’t forget, these treats make perfect stocking stuffers too!
Make a Popcorn Garland
Another one of our fun Christmas crafts using popcorn is to string a popcorn garland. What better way to decorate your Christmas tree than with a nice string of popcorn?! This is a fun and great tradition to enjoy with your family and the kids love to help. (Don’t forget the hot chocolate!).
What you need for this project is:
-Brown paper bag
You’ll want air popped or microwaved fresh popcorn seeds without oil or butter. Prepackaged popcorn is generally too expensive and buttery for this craft project. Here is an easy microwave popcorn recipe:
¼ to ½ cup popcorn kernels
Paper lunch sack (small for ½ cup seeds; large for ½ cup seeds)
Standard microwave oven
- Pour the popcorn kernels in to the sack
- Fold the bag down three times, making sure the popcorn has plenty of room to pop inside the bag
- Microwave on HIGH for 4 minutes but check sooner than that. Sometimes seeds can complete the popping time in half that amount of time. You don’t want to burn the popcorn. Be prepared to stop the microwave when the popping slows to about 2 seconds between pops
- Pour the popcorn in to a bowl or other container
- Allow to cool
The bag can be reused as long as it doesn’t have any punctures or tears.
Next, thread the needle and do not cut the thread until you are done with your line. Then, you just slide the popcorn through the needle and onto the string. You can make these lines as long or as short as necessary. Be sure to make tons of popcorn because you know you and your family won’t keep from snacking on a few bites.
P.S. While you’re at it, you can create popcorn necklaces and include small jingle bells, beads, etc.
Make Grinch Popcorn
A very popular Christmas character is of course the Grinch. Making a batch of popcorn in his honor is both fun and tasty.
The MPK way to make Grinch popcorn is to mix our Green Apple popcorn with marshmallows and red M&Ms. The mix is fruity, yet sweet and delicious. If green apple isn’t up your alley, there are plenty of other recipes that make this treat fun to make for the whole family.
Popcorn Snowman Cups
Making a healthy treat for the holidays sounds boring, yet we are often overwhelmed with sugar, chocolate and cookies all December long. One way to be festive and still be healthy is by making popcorn snowman cups.
This idea is super easy and delicious. All you need is a clear plastic cup, a Sharpie, ribbon and delicious bag of our Low Salt popcorn. Our low salt popcorn is made with just three ingredients: our gourmet popcorn, salt and coconut oil. It is gluten-free, dairy free, non-GMO, vegan and popped fresh daily. The best part, there’s no sugar!
All you do is draw a snowman face on the front, tie a beautiful Christmas ribbon around it andfill the cup with the popcorn. These are super easy to make, they are fun for the kids and easy on the waistline.
Make popcorn flavor shakers
Popcorn is truly delicious and who doesn’t love adding a bit of flavor? While there’s hundreds of varieties of gourmet popcorn, maybe you are more in the mood for homemade popcorn with a simple topping. This holiday season, it might be time to spice up your popcorn and your flavor shakers!
First, you’ll need to buy some salt shakers and be sure they are free of all salt! Next, mix your flavor. Perhaps you want some ranch flavor or taco seasoning! Maybe you are craving something sweet, like cinnamon sugar. You can make all these variations at home, and add the amount that is just right for your taste buds. Place them on the kitchen table and offer you guests a personalized treat!
